Ferrari star leads the whole way after first-lap chaos to cut Max Verstappen’s title advantage

Charles Leclerc has won his home race for the first time. The Ferrari star became the first Monegasque driver ever to triumph at Formula One’s most iconic event, finally converting an impressive pole position into a victorious Sunday on the familiar streets of the Principality after two previous high-profile failures.

Leclerc led the way all weekend in Monte Carlo, continuing his strong form on race day as he kept his composure to lead from wire to wire following a restart that followed a huge first-lap crash involving Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and the Haas cars of Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg.

The 26-year-old eased to a stylish win in an initially chaotic race that quickly gave way to a strategic battle centred around tyre management and strategy, cutting Max Verstappen’s title lead to 31 points in the process as the reigning world champion could only finish in sixth. Oscar Piastri held off Carlos Sainz to claim his first podium of the season for McLaren, with team-mate Lando Norris in fourth ahead of George Russell, Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda, Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly, whose team-mate Esteban Ocon will serve a five-place grid penalty in Canada next month after causing an all-Alpine crash early on.
